Wedding proclamations

So in the cousin’s whatsapp group the topic veered into the recent news of celebrity couples who got divorced after their grandiose weddings, where they proclaimed their love for each other in an extravagant manner. So anyway, I was like how can they just lose all that love in a year. I mean if you are going to make such grand proclamations and engrave your love all over your social fabric and wedding fabric, you’ve got to be pretty sure about your love and the person you’re marrying… how can all this love just fade away then in a year or two. As I was pondering this aloud in the group, cousin Z said something along the lines of ‘do you think Nagercoil marriages last forever’. For which cousin M quipped that the five thousand people who attend the wedding make sure of that. Which is pretty funny, if you know how chaotic the weddings are here.

Anyway, I said that the only proclamation one observes at the weddings here is the love for garish gold jewellery and ornate sarees, and that is a pretty everlasting love story if you ask me. They scream out their love for gold here and I always wonder whether they have mirrors at home to see how ridiculous it all looks. Anyway, weddings are not an aesthetic affair here but as proclamations go they seem pretty upfront about their love for gold, not to mention the obscene dowry levels here.
