Last night was spent exploring the techniques and work of Luca Signorelli, an Italian Renaissance painter, noted in particular for his ability as a draftsman and his use of foreshortening.
This is a snippet of hell, from a massive fresco titled “Damned cast into hell’ (dated late 15th and early 16th century) located in San Brizio Chapel in Orvieto, Italy. The original is quiet fierce and depicts people suffering from many such demons/devils in hell. Makes me think about Christianity and how hell seems to have quite an impact on people even to this day. I think heaven and hell are states of being, not a physical place depicted by renowned artists and harped on by preachers. If you are not in touch with the divine spirit within you, you’ll invariably create hell and live in it and suffer as a consequence of not heeding the divine spark within. If you can sense your divine soul and heed its call, then life will be blessed beyond measure…. Know Thyself.
This workshop by The Renaissance workshop last night was quite fulfilling and enjoyable, I don’t think any of us wanted it to end…
